The Hong Kong Film Development Council (FDC) and Create Hong Kong (CHK) organised a delegation to participate in the 14th Beijing International Film Festival, and held a press conference to launch the “Film Financing Scheme for Mainland Market” during the film festival. The Secretary General of FDC and Assistant Head of CHK, Mr Gary Mak, together with guests including veteran Hong Kong director Mr Andrew Lau, famous artistes Mr Philip Keung, Ms Pat Ha, and Ms Jennifer Yu as well as the representatives of the Mainland and Hong Kong film companies officiated the opening ceremony.

“The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region supports Hong Kong film companies and the Mainland cultural enterprises to invest in and promote the productions of Hong Kong directors. This will help boost the chance of Hong Kong films for release in the Mainland market and nurture more Hong Kong directors and other film production crew to enter the Mainland film market,” Mr Mak said.

Under this Scheme, the production budgets of the film projects must be between HK$25 million and HK$150 million. Approved film projects must be theatrically released in Hong Kong, and if they are successfully released in the Mainland cinemas, they will receive a government finance of HK$10 million.

In addition, FDC also held “Making Waves - Navigators of Hong Kong Cinema” film programme during the film festival, with the screenings of six Hong Kong films. Four of them are directed by emerging directors, including “Once in a Blue Moon” by Mr Lo Yiu-fai, “The Remnant” by Mr Mandrew Kwan, “Fresh Off Markham” by Mr Kurt Yuen, Mr Cyrus Lo, and Mr Trevor Choi, and “Love Lies” by Ms Ho Miu-ki. Another two films are “Dangerous Encounters of the First Kind” by Mr Hark Tsui, and “Nomad” by Mr Patrick Tam respectively.
