The Hong Kong Film Show in Guangdong 2023, an annual cinematic programme presented by Create Hong Kong (CreateHK) and the Hong Kong Film Development Council (FDC) to promote Hong Kong films and expand the audience base in the Greater Bay Area (GBA), commenced on March 29 in Guangzhou. In collaboration with the Broadway Cinematheque, and supported by the Guangdong Motion Picture Industry Association (GMPIA), the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Guangdong, the Palace Cinema and Broadway Cinemas, this month-long programme is being held from March 29 to April 30, presenting 11 Hong Kong films in six cinemas in Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Foshan.
To celebrate the occasion, the Chairman of the FDC, Dr Wilfred Wong; the Secretary-General of the FDC/Assistant Head of CreateHK, Mr Gary Mak; the Chief of Film Management Division of Guangdong Province, Mr Xia Qingwen; the President of the GMPIA, Mr Huang Changning; the Chief Executive Officer of the Broadway Theatre Co Ltd, Ms Tessa Lau, as well as the film director of the opening film "Hong Kong Family", Eric Tsang, attended the opening ceremony. Tsang also participated in a post-screening sharing session for the opening film with the audience.
Dr Wong said, "The goal of organising the Hong Kong Film Show is to foster a cultural exchange, and drive co-operation among the film industry in the GBA in order to make it as a significant cultural event in the area and provide a better platform for the new generation of filmmakers."
The programme showcased 11 Hong Kong films in Cantonese, including "Hong Kong Family", "Lost Love", "Pretty Heart", "Mama's Affair", "Table for Six", "A Guilty Conscience" and classic films including "Behind the Yellow Line", "Twelve Nights", "A Chinese Ghost Story", "Life Is a Moment Story", and "Center Stage". Besides Tsang, other film directors such as Ka Sing-fung, Aubrey Lam, Kearen Pang and Stanley Kwan also attended physical or online post-screening sharing sessions with the audiences.
Dr Wong and Mr Mak also attended the "2023 Guangdong Annual Film Conference cum Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Film Industry Summit" held on March 28 and 29. Organised by the GMPIA, the summit invited film industry representatives and related government officials from Hong Kong and Macao as well as related government officials, film associations and organisations from nine municipalities of the GBA to discuss collaboration plans to foster the development of the film industry in the GBA.
