Film Development Fund supports Hong Kong new generation film directors

The local premiere of film "The Killer Who Never Kills" will be staged this evening (October 27).This is the tenth film financed by the Film Development Fund (FDF) to be screened in Hong Kong. The estimated production budget for the film is $12.05 million and the amount of government finance is $3.01 million.

Co-directed by Mr Wan Chi-man, Jimmy and Mr Lee Feng-bor, with Mr Tsang Chi-wai, Eric as the producer, "The Killer Who Never Kills" is adapted from the series of "Killer" novels written by the renowned Taiwanese popular novelist Giddens Ko. Mr Wan is one the Hong Kong new generation film directors promoted under the "Hong Kong Film New Action" initiative of the Hong Kong Film Development Council (FDC). Further to his earlier debut film "Lover’s Discourse" also financed by the FDF, "The Killer Who Never Kills" is Mr Wan’s another co-directed production.

The Secretary General of FDC, Mr Wellington Fung, will attend the premiere. He said, "Through the ‘Hong Kong Film New Action’ project which serves as an exchange platform, we have provided the new generation directors with ample opportunities to seek cooperation. At the same time, we have financed films which hire local upcoming directors through the FDF. We aim to help nurture talent and promote the long-term development of the local film industry."

Since its launch in 2007, the FDF scheme has approved 17 applications. Nine of these films have involved eight directors and four producers who are engaged in commercial productions for the first time. Nine local and 12 international awards have been won by six of the 17 FDF-financed films.

In October 2007, the Government injected $300 million into the FDF and expanded its scope to partly finance small-to-medium budget film productions. The 17 applications approved so far have involved a total funding of about $50.71 million and estimated production budget of over $170 million.
